UHB+ Clinical Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, organised, and clinically skilled NMC/HCPC registered practitioner with a minimum of two years’ post-registration experience and strong IT skills to join the UHB+ Clinical Managers team. This role involves working closely with the Clinical Operational Manager and a team of Clinical Managers. The ideal candidate will be articulate, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and have a well-rounded and up-to-date clinical portfolio.

As part of our team, you will collaborate with experienced nurses to deliver high standards of clinical and managerial support for the Trust’s temporary workforce. You will work alongside the Clinical Managers, Retention Team, and Booking Coordinators to ensure UHB Plus bank staff are effectively managed and function optimally in their roles. Additionally, you will support and facilitate their induction into the Trust, while upholding our core values.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The post holder will play a vital role as the professional clinical point of contact supporting the Trust’s temporary staffing provision across the organisation. You will work closely with the team of Clinical Managers and the Operational Manager, assisting the Clinical Operational Manager in developing a high-quality, responsive, and committed temporary staffing workforce.

Key responsibilities include:

Acting as the primary point of contact between Temporary Staffing and Clinical Managers across the organisation.

Deputising for the Clinical Operational Manager when required, contributing to the strategy for temporary staffing, with a focus on workforce capacity, capability, competence, and standards.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

NMC Registered Nurse, Midwife, or HCPC Registered Allied Health Professional.

Degree or equivalent, supplemented by a diploma or equivalent level of post-graduate training.

Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Experience

Essential:

Significant post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting, with recent clinical experience and responsibility for staff supervision, delegation of duties, and assessment of competence.

Broad understanding of various roles and the proficiency required by clinical staff working in bank/temporary staffing roles.

Knowledge of regulated activity and its application to clinical staff, including an understanding of UK regulators (NMC/HCPC).

Experience in managing HR practices, including sickness absence, performance management, and dealing with staff concerns.

Experience in handling difficult or challenging conversations about staff conduct and performance.

Demonstrable knowledge of National Policy and directives related to temporary staffing (e.g., bank and agency utilisation).

Desirable:

Previous experience in a Band 6 role within an NHS provider organisation, with responsibility for staff deployment and leadership.

Experience in interviewing and selecting staff.

Knowledge of supporting or participating in formal/informal investigations.

Experience as a mentor.

Additional Criteria

Essential:

Ability to manage time effectively, prioritise tasks, and manage others’ workloads to agreed standards of care.

Ability to work effectively with various people to meet temporary staffing needs, address concerns, and support staff education/training.

Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, with the ability to resolve concerns and incidents.

Well-developed communication and negotiation skills, both face-to-face and over the phone.

Ability to manage conflicting demands and work under pressure while maintaining quality standards.

Tactful, with the ability to build strong working relationships.

Ability to work independently, prioritise work, and demonstrate sound clinical judgement.

Good IT skills and ability to record information electronically.

Flexibility to work across multiple locations, including home working if necessary.

Desirable:

A valid driver’s license.
