An opportunity is available for a doctor to join the Hambleton and Richmondshire Memory Service, supporting the assessment and treatment of people experiencing cognitive and mental health disorders. The service works with both working-age adults and older people.
You will also contribute to the Community Mental Health Team for Older People, providing assessment and treatment for a range of functional and organic mental health conditions. The role combines community-based clinical work with outpatient activity and home assessments, according to the needs of the service and guidance from the supervising consultant.
This is a varied post suited to a doctor with an interest in old age psychiatry who would like to develop their clinical experience within a multidisciplinary NHS environment.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
– Assess patients presenting with a range of psychiatric conditions and urgent mental health concerns.
– Undertake appropriate cognitive and dementia assessments and contribute to ongoing management.
– Carry out clinical risk assessments and develop appropriate management plans.
– Recognise situations where the Mental Health Act may apply and follow relevant procedures for assessment, admission and detention.
– Refer patients to other healthcare professionals or specialist services when their needs require additional expertise.
– Work closely with psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
– Attend outpatient clinics and undertake community or home visits as required.
– Participate in the resident doctor on-call rota.
– Maintain accurate clinical documentation and communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
– Contribute to safe, person-centred and evidence-based psychiatric care.

Candidate Requirements
Essential Clinical Skills
Applicants should demonstrate:
– Sound knowledge and practical experience in psychiatry, particularly within old age psychiatry.
– Strong clinical assessment and management skills.
– An understanding of the bio-psycho-social approach to mental healthcare.
– Broad medical knowledge relevant to psychiatric practice.
– Clear and effective spoken and written English communication skills.
Qualifications
Essential:
– MB BS or an equivalent recognised medical qualification.
– Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise at the time of application.
Desirable:
– A postgraduate qualification in psychiatry.
Professional Development
Essential:
– Current knowledge of psychiatric practice and NHS mental health services.
Desirable:
– Experience or an interest in teaching colleagues and sharing clinical knowledge with other team members.
Previous Experience
Essential:
– Previous experience working in old age psychiatry within the NHS.
Desirable:
– Experience within a community mental health team.
Professional Registration
Applicants must hold current UK professional registration relevant to the role. GMC registration and a licence to practise are essential requirements.
DBS Check
The successful applicant will be required to undergo the appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The position is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, meaning relevant criminal record information may be considered as part of the recruitment process.
