Job Overview
An excellent opportunity is available for a Registered Mental Health Nurse to join the Community Mental Health Team at Derwent Clinic, Shotley Bridge Hospital, Consett, County Durham.
This permanent, full-time Band 5 position would suit both experienced nurses and newly registered professionals who are enthusiastic about community-based mental health care. Student nurses expecting to gain their registration within the next three months are also encouraged to apply.
Newly qualified nurses will receive structured support, including a comprehensive preceptorship programme, helping them develop their clinical confidence and specialist knowledge.
The successful candidate will work with people experiencing mental health difficulties, while also supporting their families and carers. You will become part of a multidisciplinary team that values compassionate care, partnership working and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
As a Community Mental Health Nurse, you will contribute to the assessment, planning and delivery of high-quality, person-centred care.
Your responsibilities will include:
– Completing comprehensive assessments and obtaining detailed histories using a holistic approach.
– Working collaboratively with service users, families and both paid and unpaid carers.
– Developing therapeutic relationships that support recovery and positive clinical outcomes.
– Contributing effectively to multidisciplinary team discussions and decision-making.
– Working alongside external organisations and partner agencies where appropriate.
– Maintaining accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical records.
– Ensuring assessment information and care documentation remain current and accessible.
– Participating in clinical risk assessment and management.
– Applying relevant mental health, safeguarding and capacity legislation to everyday practice.
– Supporting safe medicines management, including the administration of injections where required.
– Contributing to service development, quality improvement and innovative ways of delivering care.
You will be expected to work confidently both independently and as part of a wider professional team.

Essential Qualifications and Registration
Applicants should have:
– Current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in an appropriate nursing field, such as RNMH or RNLD, with RGN registration where applicable.
– Evidence of continuing professional development.
– Willingness to become a recognised Practice Assessor/Mentor or work towards this within an agreed timeframe.
– Clinical Supervisor training, or willingness to complete the required training within the first six months of employment.
Essential Experience
You should be able to demonstrate experience or appropriate knowledge of:
– Supporting people with mental health needs and/or learning disabilities.
– Providing person-centred care within a therapeutic environment.
– Working collaboratively with service users and their families or carers.
– Working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
– Developing professional relationships with external agencies and partner organisations.
Essential Clinical Knowledge
The successful applicant should have an evidence-based understanding of best practice relevant to the clinical area.
Knowledge should include:
– Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act principles.
– Safeguarding procedures and their practical application.
– Clinical risk assessment and risk management.
– Clinical governance.
– Medicines management, including safe administration of injectable medicines.
– Current approaches to community mental health care.
Travel Requirements
The position involves working across the local community. Applicants must therefore be able to travel independently throughout the locality and have access to a suitable vehicle for work-related journeys.
