About the Institution
The UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology is one of the world’s leading centres for neuroscience research. Established in 1950 and now part of University College London, it plays a central role in advancing the understanding and treatment of neurological conditions.
Working alongside multiple research departments and clinical divisions, the Institute focuses on transforming laboratory discoveries into real-world therapies for patients with neurological diseases.
The fellowship is funded through Brain Research UK’s Miriam Marks Fund, created in memory of Miriam Marks to support research into neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. This long-standing initiative continues to drive innovation in brain science.
About the Fellowship
This postdoctoral fellowship is designed for researchers who want to lead an independent research project focused on the biological and molecular basis of neurodegenerative disorders.
The role is primarily laboratory-based and aims to deepen scientific understanding of disease mechanisms. Fellows will work under the guidance of a Principal Investigator (PI) within one of the Institute’s specialist research areas, including:
- Neurodegenerative diseases
Clinical and movement neurosciences
Neuromuscular disorders
You will collaborate across departments and contribute to a dynamic research environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver an original research project in neurodegeneration
Work closely with an identified academic sponsor (Principal Investigator)
Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration within UCL
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
Apply for additional funding to extend research beyond the fellowship
Clinical applicants may also negotiate limited clinical duties, subject to NHS agreements and checks.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following:
- Hold a PhD or medical qualification in a relevant discipline
Demonstrate strong research experience in neuroscience or related fields
Show evidence of high-quality academic output (e.g., publications)
Present a clear, innovative research proposal
Be capable of building effective research collaborations
