Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry – Mendip Older Persons Community Mental Health Team

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry to join the Mendip Older Persons Community Mental Health Team. This is a permanent, full-time position offering 10 PAs per week, spread across five days (Monday to Friday). A sample Job Plan is included in the Job Description, and a final plan will be agreed within three months of appointment.

Additionally, we support doctors looking to complete their CESR in Old Age Psychiatry and will offer guidance and resources for those wishing to pursue this qualification.

This Specialty Doctor role works alongside a supervising Consultant, other Specialty Doctors, and Trainee Psychiatrists, covering a community population of approximately 34,000 people aged 65 and over. These individuals are registered with GP practices in the towns of Frome, Wells, Glastonbury, Street, and surrounding villages.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess older adults with mental disorders, carrying a small caseload of complex and severe cases.
  • Stay up to date with the evolving evidence base and adapt clinical practice accordingly.
  • Provide consultation and advice to other team members as needed.
  • Conduct memory assessments.
  • Participate in Mental Health Act assessments within the area during working hours (if S12 approved or with prior experience).
  • Provide liaison advice to local community hospitals.
  • Attend team meetings within the Older Persons Community Mental Health Team and memory assessment meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive notes using the RIO electronic patient record system.
  • Foster effective multi-disciplinary team working and maintain strong relationships with GPs and other care teams.
  • Provide support and information to patients, families, and carers.

On-Call and Cover Arrangements:

The Specialty Doctor will coordinate holiday and study leave coverage with a colleague, and planned leave does not require locums.

There are no on-call responsibilities for this role.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration or eligibility, with current license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Experience in psychiatry, with at least three years of clinical experience in another country (if applicable).

Desirable:

  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification (e.g., membership of a psychiatry college in another country).
  • Further academic qualifications such as MRCP or research degree/diploma.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Experience in Old Age Psychiatry at ST 4-6 level or equivalent, across various settings (inpatient, memory service, community).
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based guidelines for assessing and treating mental disorders.
  • Familiarity with therapeutic approaches, including psychological therapies.
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Strong organizational and IT skills.

Desirable:

  • Specialist or sub-specialist experience in relevant areas within the NHS or similar services.
  • Training or qualifications in psychological approaches.
