Role Overview
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a newly introduced NHS service designed to improve access to urgent mental health support. As a Mental Health Advisor within the NHS 111 “press 2” service, you will be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emotional distress or mental health crises.
Your role will involve listening, supporting, and guiding callers toward the most appropriate care pathways—making a real difference at critical moments in people’s lives.
Important Note on Sponsorship
This role does not meet eligibility for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, so applicants must already have the legal right to work in the UK.
What You’ll Be Doing
First Point of Contact Support
- Answer calls from individuals seeking urgent mental health support via NHS 111
Provide reassurance, emotional support, and clear guidance
Gather key information using structured assessment pathways
Triage & Care Navigation
Assess callers’ needs and determine the most appropriate service
Direct or refer patients to:
- Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams
Community Mental Health Services
Mental Health Hubs or urgent care pathways
Crisis Communication
- Communicate calmly and effectively in high-pressure situations
Support individuals experiencing distress, anxiety, or crisis
Promote dignity, respect, and understanding for all callers
Team & Partnership Working
- Work closely with healthcare professionals and partner agencies
Contribute to a coordinated approach to urgent mental health care
Maintain accurate records using digital systems
Working Environment
- 24-hour service, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays
Fast-paced, dynamic setting where no two calls are the same
Full training provided in call handling, crisis response, and systems

Person Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Care, Customer Service, Business Administration, or willingness to work towards
Essential Experience
- Previous experience in patient care or a customer-facing role
Desirable Experience
- Experience supporting individuals with mental health or social care needs
Experience working in a call centre or high-demand environment

Good IT and data entry skills
Effective time management and prioritisation
