Role Overview

This is a flexible and hands-on role within the Hotel Services team, ideal for someone reliable, adaptable, and motivated. As a Relief Porter, you will support the day-to-day running of the hospital environment by delivering essential cleaning and basic catering services.

Your contribution will directly support patient care by helping create a safe, clean, and comfortable setting—particularly important for individuals receiving mental health or learning disability support.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will carry out a range of duties that support both patients and staff, including:

  • Maintaining cleanliness across wards, offices, and communal areas
    Assisting with food preparation and service where required
    Safely using cleaning equipment and materials
    Following hygiene, infection control, and safety procedures
    Engaging respectfully and compassionately with patients and carers
    Supporting a positive and inclusive environment
    Participating in service improvement and quality initiatives

You will be expected to work both independently and as part of a wider team, adapting quickly to changing demands.

Working Pattern

  • Shifts between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM
    Includes weekends and bank holidays
    Flexible working with opportunities for additional shifts at short notice

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications

  • Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2
    Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy skills
    Basic IT skills
    Willingness to complete NVQ Level 2 in Portering or Housekeeping

Essential Experience

  • Experience in portering duties
    Experience using cleaning materials and equipment
    Background in general cleaning work
    Experience working or volunteering in a mental health or learning disability setting

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working in a hospital or healthcare environment
    Catering or food service experience

Knowledge & Understanding

You should have:

  • Awareness of Health & Safety and COSHH regulations
    Understanding of healthcare cleanliness standards
    Knowledge of deep-cleaning techniques
    Awareness of PLACE standards (Patient-Led Assessments)
    Understanding of confidentiality and patient dignity

  • Ability to follow procedures and instructions accurately
    Strong attention to detail
    Good communication skills
    Effective time management and organisation
    Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible
    Safe handling of cleaning and catering equipment

Training & Induction

Successful applicants will complete a 5-day induction programme before starting. Ongoing training will support your development and ensure you meet required healthcare standards.
