Role Overview
This is a flexible opportunity for reliable and motivated individuals to join the Hotel Services team as a Bank Porter. The role plays an important part in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
You will contribute to both cleaning and basic catering services across clinical and non-clinical areas, helping create surroundings that support patient wellbeing and recovery—especially for individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Bank Porter, your work will vary depending on service needs, but your responsibilities will typically include:
- Delivering high standards of cleaning across wards, offices, and shared spaces
Supporting basic catering duties, including food preparation and service
Using cleaning equipment and chemicals safely and effectively
Ensuring all areas meet hygiene and safety standards
Engaging respectfully and compassionately with patients and carers
Promoting dignity, inclusion, and a positive environment for all service users
Contributing to service improvements and maintaining quality standards
You will be part of a team but also expected to use initiative and respond effectively in a busy healthcare setting.
Working Pattern
- Shifts between 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Includes weekends and bank holidays
Flexible hours, with opportunities for additional shifts at short notice
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2)
Basic numeracy and literacy skills (Level 2)
IT skills (ITQ Level 2 or equivalent)
Willingness to complete NVQ Level 2 in Portering or Housekeeping
Essential Experience
- Practical experience in cleaning duties
Familiarity with cleaning materials and equipment
Experience working or volunteering in a healthcare, mental health, or similar setting - Previous portering experience
Desirable Experience
- Catering or food service experience
Customer service experience in a busy environment
Knowledge & Understanding
You should have:
- Awareness of Health & Safety and COSHH regulations
Understanding of cleanliness standards in healthcare environments
Knowledge of deep-cleaning procedures
Awareness of confidentiality and patient privacy
Willingness to learn about PLACE standards and national cleanliness benchmarks
Key Skills
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards
Good communication skills (both written and verbal)
Ability to follow instructions and protocols
Time management and organisational skills
Ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly
Safe use of cleaning and catering equipment

Training & Development
Successful candidates will complete a 5-day induction programme before starting. Ongoing training will be provided to support your development and ensure compliance with healthcare standards.
