Job Description
About the College/Department
The Estates Department at the University of Derby is committed to fostering a dynamic, innovative, and sustainable campus that supports our mission of delivering exceptional education and pioneering research.
Our Campus Services teams focus on maintaining and enhancing the outstanding facilities and services that enable our students and staff to excel in a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment.
This position is part of the Estate Engineering Team, which collaborates closely with a wide range of suppliers and internal staff to provide technical expertise and ensure that the university’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure is compliant and well-maintained across a diverse estate, including teaching spaces, commercial areas, and student accommodations.
About the Role
The Building Services Engineer will work alongside contractors, internal maintenance teams, and various stakeholders across the University of Derby’s portfolio to ensure a positive student experience and a safe environment for all.
The successful candidate will join a small but highly skilled team of engineers and will be responsible for managing multiple service contracts (tailored to the candidate’s expertise and experience) to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant legislation. This will include using our CAFM system to schedule, monitor, and document all maintenance, remedial, and enhancement works.
While primarily based at the Kedleston Road Campus, the role will involve occasional travel between sites. The position does not involve direct reports but requires close collaboration with internal maintenance teams and contractors to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the university’s building services.
Additionally, the role will involve integrating building services for new developments into existing service contracts as part of a “soft landing” process.
As part of the Estates department’s out-of-hours rota, the postholder will be the first point of contact for urgent estates-related issues that occur outside regular hours. On-call rates will apply and be discussed during the interview process.
About You
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of a wide range of building services systems and have significant experience managing their maintenance, along with a solid understanding of the industry standards and regulations. We require candidates to hold a building services engineering degree (CIBSE Approved) or an equivalent qualification in a related field (building services, electrical, or mechanical engineering), or substantial equivalent experience in the building services sector.
The candidate should be confident in managing contractors and have a strong understanding of safe systems of work in the facilities management sector. Health and safety management qualifications are highly desirable. Experience in higher education environments, managing maintenance across residential, commercial, and industrial properties, is also beneficial.
The role requires a self-motivated individual who can work independently and as part of a team, ensuring that projects are completed effectively. Strong communication, organizational, IT, and project management skills are essential, along with the ability to prioritize and manage workloads efficiently.
A customer service ethos that aligns with the University’s values and behaviours is crucial. Outstanding communication, persuasion, and influencing skills are a must, as well as a drive for continuous improvement and a commitment to excellence.
You should have a genuine interest in staying informed about developments within the building services industry and higher education.
