The opportunity
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is looking for a motivated Band 5 Registered Nurse to join its busy Day Case Unit.
The role covers Woodpecker Ward and Nightingale Ward, providing an excellent opportunity to develop your paediatric nursing skills in a specialist environment. You will work with children and young people from birth through to 18 years, supporting patients across a wide range of clinical specialities.
Woodpecker Ward focuses on pre-operative admissions. Children are admitted to the ward, assessed and prepared for surgery before being transferred to Theatre. Following their procedure, patients who require an overnight stay are cared for on the appropriate inpatient ward.
Nightingale Ward provides a day-case service. Patients are admitted and prepared for surgery before returning to the unit for post-operative monitoring and recovery. Where clinically appropriate, they are discharged home later the same day.
Previous day-case nursing experience would be beneficial, although it is not essential. This nurse-led service gives you the opportunity to take responsibility for the patient journey from admission through to discharge while building a broad range of transferable clinical skills.

Key Responsibilities
As a Band 5 Nurse, you will contribute to delivering safe, effective and compassionate care to children, young people and their families.
Your responsibilities will include:
– Providing consistently high-quality nursing care throughout the patient’s stay.
– Assessing individual care needs and developing appropriate nursing plans.
– Delivering, reviewing and evaluating care according to each child’s clinical requirements.
– Monitoring patients and recognising changes in their condition.
– Ensuring prescribed treatments and interventions are completed safely.
– Communicating relevant clinical information to members of the multidisciplinary team.
– Supporting and supervising other members of the ward team when required.
– Prioritising workloads effectively within a busy clinical environment.
– Maintaining accurate and appropriate clinical documentation.
– Promoting safe practice, safeguarding and effective clinical governance.
– Contributing to a positive, inclusive and family-focused experience for every patient.
Working Pattern
The Day Case Unit operates Monday to Friday, from 07:00 to 20:00.
This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week, generally worked across three to four extended shifts each week. The shifts are approximately 11.5 hours in duration.

Essential qualifications and professional requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
– Current NMC registration as a Children’s Nurse, or NMC Registered Nurse/HCPC Registered ODP with substantial paediatric experience.
– Evidence of continued professional learning relevant to your clinical area.
– Basic Life Support training.
– Appropriate UK professional registration.
– Up-to-date knowledge of professional revalidation requirements.
An assessor or practice supervisor qualification or relevant experience would be an advantage.
Experience and knowledge
You should be able to demonstrate experience or transferable skills relevant to caring for children who are acutely or chronically unwell.
The successful candidate will also have:
– An understanding of current professional issues affecting children’s nursing.
– Experience of working effectively within a varied and multidisciplinary team.
– Knowledge of clinical governance, including quality improvement, audit and risk management.
– An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the ability to follow relevant Trust procedures.
– Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusive practice.
– Good IT and computer skills.
– A strong commitment to delivering family-centred care.
– A willingness to develop knowledge within specialist clinical areas.
Experience in a relevant paediatric speciality, knowledge of ward-based specialties and awareness of innovative nursing practice outside GOSH would be desirable.
