About the Opportunity

Elephant Ward is seeking experienced and compassionate Senior Staff Nurses to join its specialist paediatric haematology and oncology service.

The ward cares for children from birth to 12 years of age who require treatment for a range of blood disorders and cancers. Working within a specialist multidisciplinary team, you will play an important role in delivering safe, high-quality nursing care while supporting children and their families throughout their treatment.

This is a varied and clinically rewarding environment where nurses have opportunities to develop specialist knowledge and broaden their clinical skills. The service works closely with community nursing teams and shared-care centres to ensure children receive coordinated care across different settings.

Candidates applying for this position must be competent in SACT/chemotherapy administration and have a strong clinical background in paediatric cancer care.

What You Will Be Involved In

As a Senior Staff Nurse, you will contribute to the delivery and continuous improvement of high standards of patient care.

Your responsibilities will include:

– Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating individualised nursing care.
– Providing safe and compassionate care to children receiving complex haematology and oncology treatments.
– Supporting children undergoing treatments such as high-dose therapy, stem cell rescue and antibody-based therapies.
– Working collaboratively with families and the wider multidisciplinary team.
– Promoting family-centred care throughout the child’s treatment journey.
– Supporting evidence-based nursing practice and contributing to service improvement.
– Encouraging a positive culture of research and continuous learning.
– Acting as a mentor and supporting student nurses and other learners.
– Delegating duties appropriately while maintaining accountability for patient care.
– Participating in clinical governance, quality improvement and risk-management activities.
– Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and effective communication with colleagues and families.

Previous experience as an assessor or practice supervisor would be beneficial, although it is not essential.

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants should demonstrate:

– Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) appropriate to the specialty.
– A recognised and relevant nursing qualification.
– Evidence of continued professional development within paediatric nursing or the relevant clinical specialty.
– Experience caring for acutely or chronically unwell children, or relevant transferable specialist experience.
– Competence in SACT/chemotherapy.
– Knowledge of current professional issues affecting children’s nursing.
– The ability to organise, prioritise and manage patient care effectively.
– Strong verbal and written communication skills.
– Good numeracy and time-management abilities.
– Confidence working independently as well as contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
– The ability to delegate appropriately.
– A clear commitment to compassionate, family-centred nursing.
– An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and relevant Trust procedures.
– Awareness of clinical governance, quality improvement, audit and risk management.
– Understanding of research and evidence-based practice.
– Basic computer skills.
– Awareness of NMC revalidation requirements.
– Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
– An appreciation of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

Desirable Skills and Experience

The following would strengthen an application:

– Experience administering intravenous medicines.
– Experience managing central venous access devices.
– Assessor or practice supervisor experience.
– Previous experience within paediatric haematology or oncology.
– Experience within an NHS environment.
– Knowledge of clinical incident and complaint procedures.
