Job Description
The Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for individuals with lived experience of mental health services to join its Positive and Safe Training Team as a Peer Positive and Safe Trainer.
This unique role is designed to strengthen recovery-focused and trauma-informed approaches across the Trust by placing lived experience at the centre of staff learning and development.
The successful candidates will work alongside healthcare professionals to help shape and deliver training programmes that promote compassionate, person-centred mental health care throughout the organisation.
About the Role
The Peer Positive and Safe Trainer will contribute to the design, delivery, and evaluation of specialist training focused on recovery-oriented care, positive behaviour support, de-escalation approaches, and staff wellbeing.
A key part of the role involves using personal lived experience of mental health challenges and secondary mental health services to support learning, encourage reflection, and promote meaningful cultural change within clinical practice.
This is a Trust-wide position and will involve travel across different geographical service areas.
Main Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Co-design and deliver face-to-face training sessions alongside clinical professionals
Share lived experience and recovery-focused perspectives to support staff learning
Promote compassionate and person-centred approaches to mental health care
Contribute to the development of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practice
Support the evaluation and continuous improvement of training programmes
Work collaboratively within the Positive and Safe Training Team
Help deliver training linked to restrictive intervention reduction and positive behavioural support
Training topics may include:
- Recovery-focused care approaches
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Trauma-informed care
Harm minimisation strategies
Verbal de-escalation techniques
Staff wellbeing and reflective practice
Personal safety and lone working
Behaviour support planning and debriefing processes

Candidate Requirements
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Personal lived experience of using secondary mental health services
Experience sharing recovery experiences in supportive or professional settings
Confidence delivering presentations or facilitating discussions
Basic computer and Microsoft Office skills
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
GCSE-level Maths and English qualifications or willingness to work towards them
Additional Requirements
- Ability to travel independently across Trust locations in line with service needs
Commitment to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approaches to care
