Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated mechanical engineering professional to join its Estates & Facilities division as an Estates Officer (Mechanical).
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled leader who wants to play a key role in maintaining and improving critical healthcare infrastructure across a major NHS organisation. The successful candidate will support the safe operation, compliance, and long-term sustainability of hospital mechanical systems that directly contribute to patient care and operational resilience.
The position combines technical leadership, project management, compliance oversight, and strategic estates planning within a modern healthcare environment.
Role Overview
As Estates Officer (Mechanical), you will oversee the maintenance, performance, and statutory compliance of a broad range of mechanical engineering systems across Trust sites.
Key infrastructure responsibilities include:
- Heating and ventilation systems
Air conditioning and HVAC services
Steam boiler plant operations
Water treatment and pressure systems
Mechanical plant maintenance and upgrades
Building Management Systems (BMS)
You will also act as an Authorised Person for designated systems, ensuring that engineering services operate safely, efficiently, and in line with NHS technical standards and legislative requirements.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Manage the servicing, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical plant and engineering systems
Lead compliance activities in accordance with Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and statutory regulations
Provide specialist technical advice for estates projects and infrastructure developments
Participate in capital project planning, procurement, and implementation
Conduct risk assessments, audits, and safety inspections
Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives across Trust estates
Oversee contractor performance and ensure quality assurance standards are met
Work closely with senior management teams on operational and strategic estates planning
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- ONC/HNC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
HND, Degree, or equivalent higher-level engineering qualification
Evidence of continuing professional development
PRINCE2 or equivalent project management qualification
Desirable Qualifications
- Membership of a recognised professional engineering institution
Essential Experience & Skills
Candidates should demonstrate experience in:
- Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) systems
Building Management Systems (BMS)
Mechanical maintenance planning and compliance management
Supervisory or team leadership responsibilities
Estates engineering within complex operational environments
Additional Desirable Experience
- Preparing reports and business cases for senior leadership teams
Budget planning and resource management
Working with executive-level stakeholders
Project and contractor management
