About the Role
The University of Reading is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Human Geography with expertise in quantitative and/or mixed-methods research and teaching.
This role is part of a dynamic academic environment within the Department of Geography and Environmental Science. You will contribute to research and teaching that critically explores issues of inequality, power, and social transformation, with a focus on building more just and sustainable futures.
The position sits within the Human Geography Research Cluster (HGRC), which forms part of the Global Development Research Division. The cluster is internationally recognised for its work on cultural, political, urban, environmental, and feminist geographies.
Research Focus
You will be expected to develop an active and impactful research profile that aligns with and strengthens existing departmental strengths. Key areas of interest include:
- Critical Human Geography with a focus on inequality and power
Quantitative and/or mixed-methods approaches in geographical research
Social, environmental, and spatial justice
Urban, political, or development geography
Participatory and interdisciplinary research approaches
Your research should complement existing work within the HGRC and contribute to debates around progressive social and environmental change.
Teaching Responsibilities
You will play a key role in delivering high-quality and innovative teaching across undergraduate Geography programmes.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing and delivering engaging lectures and seminars
Teaching quantitative and/or mixed-methods in Human Geography
Supporting students in developing research skills and methodologies
Supervising undergraduate dissertations
Contributing to field-based teaching and practical learning activities
Participating in curriculum development and enhancement
The role requires a strong commitment to inclusive, student-centred teaching and the ability to translate complex concepts into accessible learning experiences.
About You
We are looking for an enthusiastic academic who combines strong research capability with a passion for teaching.
Essential Requirements:
- A PhD in Human Geography or a closely related discipline
Experience (or strong potential) of producing high-quality academic publications
Ability to teach quantitative and/or mixed-methods approaches
Experience supporting or developing research funding applications
Strong understanding of key debates in Human Geography
Desirable Experience:
- Evidence of securing or contributing to external research funding
Experience of field-based teaching or applied research
Engagement with interdisciplinary research projects
Academic Responsibilities
In addition to teaching and research, you will:
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education delivery
Support dissertation supervision and student mentoring
Participate in departmental administration and academic citizenship
Engage in collaborative research within and beyond the university
Contribute to funding applications and research development activities
