About the Role
The University of Reading is seeking an experienced legal professional to lead its Research Contracts function within the Research, Engagement & Innovation Office (REIO).
This is a senior leadership role where you will oversee the delivery of a high-quality contracts service that supports the university’s research and innovation activities. You’ll work closely with academic staff, senior leadership, and external partners to ensure agreements are robust, compliant, and aligned with institutional goals.
Managing a team of contracts specialists, you will play a key role in shaping how research collaborations are structured and delivered across the university.
About the Department
The Research, Engagement & Innovation Office supports the full research lifecycle — from funding applications and project setup to impact delivery and external partnerships. The Research Contracts team is central to this work, ensuring that all agreements underpinning research activity are handled effectively and professionally.
Key Responsibilities
As Head of Research Contracts, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and developing a team of contracts professionals, ensuring high standards of service delivery
Overseeing the drafting, review, and negotiation of a wide range of research and innovation agreements
Providing expert legal and contractual advice to academic staff and institutional leaders
Balancing legal, financial, and operational considerations to reach practical and effective agreements
Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners
Driving improvements in processes, systems, and policies to enhance efficiency and service quality
Ensuring compliance with relevant legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements
About You
This role requires a combination of legal expertise, leadership ability, and strong interpersonal skills.
Essential Requirements:
- Significant experience in drafting and negotiating research or commercial contracts
Proven ability to lead and manage a professional team
Strong track record of improving systems, processes, or service delivery
Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive
Undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification)
