About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in a substantive post, working across both an inpatient rehabilitation unit (Willow Ward) and a newly developing Open Mental Health Rehabilitation Team.
This innovative service, delivered in partnership with voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, focuses on delivering recovery-oriented care for individuals with complex and enduring mental health needs.
The post is full-time (10 Programmed Activities per week) and may be structured over four days, with flexible and partial remote working considered where appropriate. A dedicated office, IT equipment, and administrative support will be provided.
Service Overview
Willow Ward – Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit
Willow Ward is an 11-bed mixed-gender inpatient rehabilitation service supporting adults with severe and complex mental health conditions. Patients may present with a combination of:
- Enduring mental illness
Cognitive impairment
Neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. autism, ADHD)
Substance misuse
Long-term physical health conditions
The ward supports both detained and voluntary patients and works closely with community services to support recovery and discharge planning.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Care Delivery
- Provide consultant-level leadership across Willow Ward and the rehabilitation team
Manage a caseload of inpatients and community rehabilitation patients
Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment, treatment, and care planning
Maintain Responsible Clinician (RC) duties under the Mental Health Act
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead and support a multi-disciplinary clinical team
Ensure clear role definition and shared understanding of responsibilities within the team
Promote effective communication and coordinated care across services
Support reflective practice, learning from incidents, and continuous improvement
Service Development
- Contribute to the expansion and strategic development of rehabilitation services
Participate in service redesign aligned with community mental health transformation
Engage in business planning and service improvement initiatives
Governance & Quality
- Ensure robust clinical governance and risk management systems
Monitor service quality and support performance improvement
Participate in audit, appraisal, and revalidation processes
Maintain accurate clinical documentation and reporting
On-Call Duties
Participate in a non-residential on-call rota (1 in 11) covering evenings and weekends
Provide senior medical and Section 12 Mental Health Act responsibilities
Support inpatient and community crisis cover as required
What We Are Looking For
Essential Requirements
- Medical degree with GMC registration
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligible via CCT)
Strong clinical experience in adult psychiatry
Ability to work independently at consultant level
Experience in leadership or service development
Core Skills
- Advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making
Strong leadership and team coordination abilities
Ability to manage complex cases across inpatient and community settings
Commitment to multidisciplinary and recovery-focused care
