Shape the Future of Older Adult Mental Health Services
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to join its well-established Older People’s Mental Health Service in Northallerton.
This newly created consultant post has been designed to support workforce wellbeing, sustainable service delivery, and high-quality patient care across Memory Services and Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT).
The role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced psychiatrist seeking a balanced and rewarding consultant position within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.
About the Role
The successful candidate will provide consultant leadership across both the Hambleton Community Mental Health Team and the Memory Service covering Hambleton and Richmondshire.
The post includes:
4 Programmed Activities (PA) supporting the Community Mental Health Team
6 Programmed Activities dedicated to the Memory Service
A 7.5 Direct Clinical Care and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities work structure
The consultant will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, postgraduate medical staff, and specialist mental health teams to deliver person-centred assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support for older adults experiencing cognitive, functional, and complex mental health conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Main duties of the role include:
- Delivering consultant psychiatric care within Older Adult Mental Health Services
Providing specialist assessment and management for patients attending the Memory Service and CMHT
Maintaining high-quality electronic clinical records in line with Trust standards
Participating in multidisciplinary team working and collaborative care planning
Supervising and supporting junior medical staff
Participating in annual appraisal, revalidation, audit, and quality improvement activities
Undertaking Mental Health Act responsibilities as an Approved Clinician and Section 12 approved doctor
Supporting service development and clinical governance initiatives
Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching where appropriate
Working Environment & Team Support
The role is based at North Moor House, where the consultant will have:
- A dedicated office space
Full-time medical secretary support
Close working relationships with Memory Service and CMHT staff
Access to experienced consultant colleagues across the locality
The service is supported by additional Older People’s Mental Health Consultants working across liaison psychiatry, crisis services, and community teams within North Yorkshire.
Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Registration
Applicants must have:
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry or expected within six months
MRCPsych qualification
Approved Clinician status or ability to obtain within three months
Section 12 approval or ability to achieve within three months
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Essential Skills & Experience
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Excellent clinical knowledge within Old Age Psychiatry
Strong communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
Ability to manage clinical complexity and diagnostic uncertainty
Experience using evidence-based psychiatric practice
Participation in clinical audit, research, or service evaluation
Commitment to continuing professional development and teaching
Understanding of NHS structures, governance, and service improvement
Desirable Experience
- Leadership experience within multidisciplinary services
Research publications, presentations, or educational achievements
Additional qualifications in medical education, management, or research
Specialist NHS or equivalent service experience relevant to older adult psychiatry
