Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward-thinking Pharmacy Technician to join a dynamic NHS Pharmacy team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about delivering safe, effective, and patient-focused pharmaceutical care within a supportive and innovative environment.

We welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced Pharmacy Technicians. For suitable candidates, there is a clear progression pathway from Band 4 to Band 5 upon successful completion of in-house competency development.

The post offers flexible working options (minimum 22.5 hours per week) and includes participation in a rota covering evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary pharmacy workforce, rotating across multiple specialist areas:

1. Medicines Optimisation

  • Support safe and effective use of medicines across wards and departments
    Complete medicines reconciliation for admitted patients
    Assess and manage patients’ own medicines (PODs)
    Provide counselling and education to patients and carers
    Support discharge processes and ensure continuity of care
    Assist with ward-based and dispensary medicine supply

2. Aseptic Services

  • Work within a modern aseptic production facility (Beacon Production Unit)
    Prepare chemotherapy and sterile treatments for individual patients
    Operate specialist equipment in compliance with safety standards
    Maintain accuracy and quality assurance in sterile preparation processes

3. Dispensary Services

  • Dispense medicines for inpatient and outpatient use, including controlled drugs
    Operate automated dispensing systems and pharmacy robotics
    Participate in final accuracy checking duties (once qualified)
    Support supervision and smooth running of dispensary operations

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent)
    BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science (or equivalent)
    Accredited Accuracy Checking Technician qualification
    Medicines Optimisation training (including medicines reconciliation and POD management)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Aseptic processing qualification (PIPC or equivalent)
    Additional medicines optimisation or discharge facilitation training

Essential Experience

  • Experience working within hospital pharmacy services
    Competence in dispensing medicines for patients
    Ability to provide medicines advice and patient counselling

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure to mental health pharmacy services
    Experience in multidisciplinary ward-based environments
    Participation in audits or service improvement projects
    Experience delivering training to pharmacy staff or learners

Professional Expectations

  • Strong understanding of hospital pharmacy operations
    Commitment to patient safety and clinical governance
    Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
