Role Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to join a forward-thinking and integrated CAMHS service across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The role involves delivering high-quality specialist mental health care to children, young people (0–18 years), and their families, while also contributing to teaching, service development, and collaborative clinical leadership across multiple sites.

You will work within a dynamic system that includes inpatient, outpatient, liaison, and community-based services, ensuring coordinated and responsive care for young people with complex mental health needs.

 Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for children and young people
    Manage a clinical caseload of approximately 60–70 patients, including varying levels of complexity and risk
    Undertake around 15–20 new assessments per year, with caseload adjusted based on clinical need
    Offer consultation and guidance to multidisciplinary colleagues across CAMHS services
    Deliver care in line with agreed commissioning criteria and service pathways

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Work closely with CAMHS teams across Southampton, Portsmouth, and surrounding areas
    Participate in shared care arrangements and cross-cover systems
    Collaborate with liaison psychiatry teams at Southampton General Hospital, particularly for self-harm and crisis presentations
    Contribute to service development and clinical governance activities

Teaching & Academic Contribution

  • Dedicate 2 programmed activities (PAs) to medical student teaching
    Support the training and supervision of junior doctors and other healthcare professionals
    Promote evidence-based learning within the CAMHS workforce

On-Call & Out-of-Hours Work

Participate in on-call rota arrangements, providing emergency psychiatric support
Contribute to both in-hours liaison services and out-of-hours CAMHS cover across the region

 Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
    Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)

    MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
    Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, or within 6 months of CCT
