About the Role
The University of Reading is seeking an experienced and approachable HR professional to join its Human Resources team as an HR Advisor.
In this role, you will act as a trusted partner to managers and staff, offering practical and timely advice across a wide range of people-related matters. You’ll be working within a supportive HR structure, collaborating closely with HR Partners and colleagues across advisory and service teams.
This is a varied position where you’ll balance casework, advisory responsibilities, and involvement in wider HR initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
You will play a central role in supporting managers and ensuring effective people management across your assigned areas. Your work will include:
- Providing professional HR advice on employee relations matters such as absence, performance, disciplinary issues, grievances, and recruitment
Managing casework independently, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant outcomes
Supporting managers in applying HR policies and best practices
Building strong working relationships with stakeholders across the university
Contributing to complex recruitment and resourcing processes alongside HR colleagues
Delivering training sessions and guidance to managers on HR-related topics
Participating in HR projects and continuous service improvement initiatives
Working Environment
You will be part of a collaborative HR Advisory team consisting of HR Advisors and HR Partners who work together to deliver high-quality, people-focused services. The wider HR function provides opportunities to engage in strategic projects and professional development.
About You
This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in HR who enjoys problem-solving and working closely with people.
Essential Experience & Skills:
- Proven experience in an HR advisory or similar role
Strong knowledge of UK employment law and its practical application
Experience handling complex employee relations cases
Ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and meet deadlines
Confident communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to influence and support managers in decision-making

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Commitment to continuous professional development in HR
Interview Process
As part of the selection process, candidates will be given a practical scenario to review. You’ll have 20 minutes to prepare your response, followed by a discussion during the interview.
