Job Overview
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Registered Nurse to join Cedar Ward at West Park Hospital in Darlington.
Cedar Ward provides care for female patients in an acute inpatient mental health setting. The ward currently operates with 10 beds, although changes to bed capacity are being considered.
This position could suit both experienced nurses and newly registered professionals who are looking to develop their skills in an acute mental health environment. Student nurses who expect to complete their registration within the next three months are also encouraged to apply.
Newly registered nurses will receive structured support through a preceptorship programme, together with appropriate training and development opportunities. The Trust is committed to helping staff build confidence while progressing their clinical careers.
You will become part of a multidisciplinary team focused on providing safe, compassionate and recovery-oriented care. Working closely with patients, families and carers, you will contribute to treatment planning and help deliver care based on individual needs and current clinical practice.
What You Will Do
As a Staff Nurse on Cedar Ward, your responsibilities will include providing high-quality nursing care to women experiencing acute mental health difficulties.
You will:
– Assess patients’ needs and contribute to individual care and recovery plans.
– Provide safe, compassionate and person-centred nursing care.
– Carry out appropriate clinical and therapeutic interventions.
– Work closely with doctors, nurses, therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
– Develop positive working relationships with patients, relatives and carers.
– Take responsibility for patients as their named nurse.
– Support patients throughout their recovery and help reduce the impact of mental health conditions on their lives.
– Contribute to the safe and effective day-to-day operation of the ward.
– Promote good standards of clinical practice and patient experience.
– Support student nurses and other colleagues in their professional development.
– Act as a positive role model and demonstrate the Trust’s values in everyday practice.
– Participate in clinical risk assessment, safeguarding and medicines management.
– Help maintain a positive image of mental health services within the Trust and wider community.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the continued development of the ward, working alongside patients, carers and colleagues to strengthen the team’s approach to leadership and care delivery.
Training and Career Development

Newly registered nurses can benefit from a preceptorship programme designed to support the transition into professional practice. Nurses who are interested in developing their leadership, supervision or assessment skills will also be supported to progress in these areas.
Candidate Requirements
Professional Qualifications
Applicants should have:
– Current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as an RNMH or RNLD.
– Evidence of continuing professional development.
– Practice assessor or mentor status, or a willingness to work towards this within an agreed period.
– Clinical supervisor training, or willingness to complete the required training.
Relevant Experience
The successful applicant should have experience of, or an appropriate understanding of:
– Supporting people with mental health conditions and/or learning disabilities.
– Delivering care within a person-centred and therapeutic environment.
– Working collaboratively with patients and their families or carers.
– Working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
– Working with external organisations and partner agencies when required.
Clinical Knowledge
You should have a sound understanding of evidence-based nursing practice relevant to the clinical area.
You will also need knowledge of:
– The Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
– Safeguarding principles and their practical application.
– Clinical risk assessment and risk management.
– Clinical governance.
– Safe medicines management, including the administration of injections.
