Job Description

About Us

The Research Department of Epilepsy at UCL is dedicated to improving the lives of people with epilepsy by uncovering and addressing the mechanisms that cause the condition and its associated comorbidities. The department integrates both basic and clinical science to deliver impactful, patient-focused research.

Within the department, the Epilepsy Imaging Group leads research on developing advanced imaging technologies to enhance epilepsy diagnosis and surgical planning. The team focuses on innovative, image-guided techniques, including stereotactic intracranial EEG, tumour biopsy planning, and image-guided resections, all aimed at improving neurosurgical precision and patient outcomes.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow (Clinical Imaging) to join our NIHR-funded project, “Refining Neurosurgical Planning Software for Clinical Use.” This project is a collaboration between UCL and King’s College London (KCL), combining expertise in clinical neuroscience and computer science to enhance EpiNav — a neurosurgical planning platform designed to improve electrode placement and tumour biopsy trajectories.

You will take a leading role in refining and evaluating EpiNav for clinical implementation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Optimising vessel segmentation on MRI and planning stereotactic EEG and biopsy trajectories.
  • Conducting usability and efficiency assessments and analysing workflow data.
  • Providing clinical feedback to the software development team to guide updates.
  • Maintaining user documentation and contributing to academic publications.
  • Supporting patient and public engagement activities.
  • Delivering training for collaborators and clinical partners.

This post offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational research at the interface of neurosurgery, imaging, and digital health innovation.

Start Date: 1 December 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter)

About You

You will hold an MD or PhD in neurosurgery, neurophysiology, or a related field, with prior postdoctoral research experience. Essential skills and experience include:

  • Expertise in intracranial EEG and stereotactic neurosurgical planning.
  • Proven track record of first-author publications and supervision of students or research staff.
  • Strong technical skills in data analysis, data management, and programming (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
  • Ability to integrate AI techniques in neuroimaging data analysis.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and teamwork abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • This role qualifies for a Skilled Worker visa or Global Talent visa sponsorship, and international applicants are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary: £54,931 – £61,213 per annum (inclusive of London Allowance)
  • 41 days holiday (27 annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 6 closure days)
  • Option to purchase 5 additional annual leave days
  • Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) pension scheme
  • Cycle to Work and Season Ticket Loan schemes
  • Immigration loan and discounted medical insurance
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
  • On-site nursery and gym
  • Employee Assistance Programme and staff wellbeing initiatives
