About the Role

We’re looking for a talented Core Developer to join our team at a transformative time for the University. You’ll play a central role in shaping and supporting a suite of complex, integrated software systems that are crucial to delivering the high-quality services we aspire to provide.

As part of a collaborative, stakeholder-focused team, you’ll work closely with service owners to improve and evolve our digital platforms. You’ll contribute to both maintaining essential legacy systems and building modern, efficient alternatives—helping drive the University’s transition to a cleaner, more agile digital environment.

We value curiosity and innovation. You’ll have space to challenge ideas, bring new solutions to the table, and help redefine how we build and deliver digital services at Sussex.

About You

You’re a curious problem-solver who enjoys getting to the root of issues and creating robust, scalable solutions.

You should bring:

  • Solid experience with PHP, web application development, and API integrations
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as Twig and native JavaScript
  • A proactive approach to debugging and collaborating across teams, including infrastructure
  • A team mindset, with the confidence to challenge existing processes and help shape best practices
  • A strong sense of ownership and a desire to be seen as a “go-to” person in your area of expertise

You thrive in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same and where legacy challenges are balanced with opportunities for innovation.

About the Division

Our Digital and IT division is entering a period of exciting transformation. Backed by strategic investment and executive-level support, we’re reimagining how we deliver digital services—moving toward a modern, agile, and data-driven future.

With a major infrastructure upgrade underway, new accommodation developments, and an institution-wide focus on digital enablement, this is an ideal time to join a growing team at the heart of change. You’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact as we replace legacy systems, modernise platforms, and deliver real value to staff and students alike.
