About the Role

The Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Sussex is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Sociology on a one-year fixed-term basis. This role has been created to provide teaching and administrative cover during a period of research leave within the department.

You will play an important role in delivering high-quality teaching and supporting students across undergraduate programmes. A key part of your responsibility will be convening and teaching modules focused on migration, including Migration and Integration (Year 2) and Migration, Identity and Home (Year 3). In addition, you will contribute to core Sociology teaching, supervise dissertations, and undertake marking and assessment duties.

The role suits someone who values teaching-led academic work and enjoys working closely with students in a supportive and collaborative environment.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver engaging lectures and seminars in Sociology
    Lead and manage key modules in migration studies
    Supervise undergraduate dissertations and provide academic guidance
    Design and mark assessments in line with university standards
    Contribute to student support and pastoral care
    Participate in departmental activities and academic administration

You will help ensure students receive a high-quality learning experience aligned with UK academic frameworks

About You

You are an enthusiastic educator with a strong academic background and a commitment to student learning.

You should have:

  • A PhD in Sociology or a closely related field
    Experience teaching in higher education
    Knowledge or research interest in migration, identity, or related areas
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    The ability to work collaboratively within an academic team
