About the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE)

The Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) is a joint initiative between UCL Engineering Sciences and the UCL Institute of Education. It conducts research and develops curricula to advance engineering education worldwide. The Centre is deeply connected to the global engineering education community and supports innovative, evidence-based teaching at UCL and through external collaborations.

The Role

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join the CEE on a fixed-term basis for 12 months. This post offers an exciting opportunity to carry out research at the intersection of engineering, education, and the social sciences.

The role will focus on understanding how engineering students develop the skills needed to tackle open-ended sociotechnical problems—issues that require both technical knowledge and social awareness.

The postholder will:

Lead research into student learning within the Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) and/or the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY).

Collaborate with academic staff involved in IEP/EFY.

Contribute research insights that may inform and enhance teaching within these programmes.

This is a research-focused position.

About You

Applicants should demonstrate the following:

A completed or near-completed doctorate in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering Education, Education, Social Sciences, STS, Philosophy, Humanities, Engineering).

Strong knowledge of research in the field, including empirical methods and critical scholarship.

Ability to design and deliver original, rigorous contributions to the subject area.

Commitment to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion in education and research.
