The University of Reading is inviting applications for a permanent academic position in Applied Linguistics and Digital Media within its internationally recognised Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics.

About the Department
The Department has a long-established reputation for leadership in Applied Linguistics and TESOL and was among the earliest institutions in the UK to offer specialist degree programmes in these fields.
Today, the Department continues to combine academic excellence with innovative teaching and research. It is currently ranked among the leading centres for English Language studies in the UK and internationally, with a strong research profile recognised through the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Alongside its established expertise in Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Phonetics, TESOL, and Language Assessment, the Department is expanding its work in Digital Media and Communication, particularly in relation to emerging technologies and Generative AI.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will contribute to both teaching and research across Digital Media, Communication, Applied Linguistics, and TESOL programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The University is especially interested in applicants whose research explores the impact of emerging digital technologies — including Generative AI — on communication, discourse, pedagogy, professional interaction, and language learning.
The role also involves research supervision, curriculum development, academic collaboration, and participation in externally funded research initiatives.
Main Responsibilities
Key duties will include:
- Delivering engaging teaching across Applied Linguistics, Digital Media, Communication, and TESOL modules
Conducting high-quality research leading to internationally recognised publications
Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations or research projects
Developing innovative teaching approaches connected to digital communication and emerging technologies
Contributing to research funding applications and collaborative academic projects
Supporting curriculum development and departmental academic activities
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
- A strong record of research publication in respected international academic journals
Teaching experience in Digital Media and Communication alongside Applied Linguistics and/or TESOL
Research expertise related to emerging technologies, including Generative AI and digital communication practices
Experience supervising student research projects at undergraduate or postgraduate level
Evidence of research grant applications or funding success
Excellent communication, presentation, and academic collaboration skills
