Mechanical Support Technician
Salary: £42,840 to £47,124 per year (depending on skill set and experience).
Full-time (37 hours each week)
Contract Type: 2 Open-ended Positions
The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is located in Harwell, Oxfordshire.
ISIS is the world’s most productive spallation neutron source, supplying neutron and muon beams to scientists studying the structure and characteristics of matter for the benefit of research and engineering in the United Kingdom and around the world.
The ISIS Experimental Operations Division requires three support technicians to give technical support to visiting scientists while also supplying and maintaining sample environment equipment.
We are now searching for two Mechanical Support Technicians (24000097) or Senior Mechanical Support Technicians to work in the Pressure and Furnace Section. This post will be part of a small team that provides technical hands-on practical support to visiting scientists at ISIS, including gas handling, high pressure, and high temperature experimental systems.
ISIS has four 50-day cycles per year, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, therefore some paid overtime is required for this position, as well as on-call duty with additional allowances given.
Please be aware that you will occasionally be required to work in classified radiation locations, as well as relevant science support laboratories and beamlines.
Your responsibilities:
● Off-line preparation, maintenance, and testing of sample environment equipment, such as high temperature furnaces and pressure systems for gas handling.
● Installation and commissioning of sample environment equipment for neutron and muon instruments.
● Once completely trained, you will be able to identify problems and provide effective solutions.
● As part of a larger support team, collaborate with some of the world’s best experts to assist deliver scientific studies.
● Contribute to the creation of novel sample environment equipment.
● Comprehensive experimental support, including 24/7 troubleshooting, fault identification, and equipment repair. Providing on-call coverage during the user programme.
● The ISIS plant operates on four 50-day cycles each year, thus a flexible approach to working will be required to satisfy our support role requirements.
Contact and Communication
● You will interface everyday with support personnel, engineers, in-house scientists, and visiting international experts.
Personal Skills and Attributes
You will have a comprehensive practical mechanical engineering background. A solid understanding of material properties, as well as expertise and experience with the mechanical assembly and testing of delicate precision equipment. You will be highly driven and capable of working effectively as part of a team. Demonstrate hands-on mechanical assembly and testing experience, a willingness to learn new skills and techniques, a highly driven mindset, and the ability to work under deadlines. Experience in gas handling and/or high temperature procedures would be beneficial in the post, but it is not required because extensive training will be provided in these areas.
The factors will be evaluated during shortlisting (S) and/or interviews (I).
- HNC or equivalent in a relevant topic (S)
- Mechanical apprenticeship or applicable technical training and experience (S)
- Advanced level of practical knowledge and experience with mechanical engineering methods, including the ability to work from engineering drawings (S&I).
- Advanced degree of practical knowledge and experience with assembly and testing methods for delicate and precision engineering equipment, particularly in gas handling, high pressure, and high temperature applications. (S&I)
- Capability to communicate technical details to scientists and engineers (S&I).
- Bring thoughts and solutions to the sections on gas handling, high pressure, and high temperature systems.
- Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office (I).
- Calmness when dealing with conflicting deadlines and priorities (I)
