JOB SUMMARY

 

As a member of the Sport Development Team, you will oversee the development of hockey at the University of Glasgow. You will lead training for our Men’s and Women’s Performance and Development squads, as well as the Women’s First Team on match days, which are normally Wednesdays in BUCS British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) and weekends in national league games. In addition, you will assist in the recruitment and development of self-employed and volunteer coaches in charge of the other teams representing both men’s and women’s clubs. You will collaborate with the Performance Sport Manager, Club Committees, and other members of the Sport Development Team to recruit international standard student athletes and elevate the performance level of UofG’s Hockey programs in national and student competitions.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Inspire and lead the Hockey programmes, expressing the strategic vision and ensuring that staff and volunteers are contributing to the overall UofG Sport and University objectives.

2. To design programs for all squads at Glasgow University Hockey Clubs to promote high performance and player development in conjunction with full-time education.

3. Oversee the Performance and Development Squad training sessions throughout the playing season, keeping high performance and player development at the forefront of each session.

4. In charge of monitoring the coaching infrastructure across the clubs, including the recruitment of additional coaches to support the plan and ensuring that all squads receive sufficient coaching. This involves long-term planning for coach provision, such as a coach education program to recruit, train, and retain self-employed and volunteer coaches.

5. Consider and deliver hockey camps for the local community, creating job possibilities for student hockey coaches and raising revenue for reinvestment in the hockey program.

6. Meet the annual Key Performance Indicators agreed upon with the University of Glasgow Sport Leadership Team in accordance with the strategic goals of UofG Sport and the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA).

7. In charge of program monitoring and assessment, as well as identifying new initiatives and program aspects to ensure that the program remains professional and motivated.

8. To collaborate successfully with other colleagues, particularly those who administer the curriculum, and to leverage available knowledge in areas such as strength and conditioning.

9. To represent the University Hockey Programme by advocating for and actively recruiting the best prospective student athletes to the university.

10. Contribute to the creation and implementation of new service and UofG Sport development projects, finding ideas that enhance the student experience and/or service efficacy.

11. Responsible for mentoring all coaches involved in the program and providing appropriate support systems to help coaches reach their full potential.

12. Maintain and acquire relevant professional understanding of current hockey issues at the local, national, and worldwide levels, as well as promote the University’s interests at national, regional, and local meetings and conferences.

13. Foster relationships with key internal and external departments and organisations to enhance service delivery and program quality, such as Development and Alumni, Recruitment, MVLS Exercise Science Departments, External – Winning Students, Scottish Student Sport, Sportscotland, Scottish Hockey, GB Hockey, and BUCS.

14. Foster collaborations with local communities to create mutually advantageous links that align with the University’s strategic goals for local engagement and program growth.

15. Ensure that the welfare of all club members and coaches is constantly prioritised, and provide guidance for strengthening welfare practices across the club.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 SCQF Level 8 (HND, SVQ4) or equivalent, plus experience in personal development in a similar function.

A2: UKCC Level 2 Hockey Coach (or similar).

A3 Valid, clean driver’s licence

A4 Current First Aid Qualification (minimum Emergency First Aid) or ability to get accredited status prior to starting the role.

A5 Thorough knowledge and comprehension of the organisation and structure of British / Scottish Student Sport, including competitive programming, opportunities, and structural organisation.

A6 Comprehensive knowledge and comprehension of the organisation and structure of hockey in Scotland and Great Britain.

A7 Detailed comprehension of university hockey.

Desirable:

B1 Degree-level education.

B2: UKCC Level 3 Hockey Coach

B3 UKCC Level 2 Strength and Conditioning (or an equivalent).

B4 Understanding of current trends in the sport/performance sport sector.

B5 Knowledge and experience using video analysis software to increase performance.

E2 Relevant experience with performance coaching.

E3 Experience playing or teaching high-performance hockey.

E4 Demonstrable experience developing, monitoring, and reviewing high-performance training programs.

E5 Proven experience in leading, mentoring, and developing other coaches.

E6 Proven track record of productive collaboration with partners.

E7 Proven experience handling budgets.

E8 Experience in establishing, reviewing, and improving components of the student experience (or similar).

E9 Experience with partnership development and delivery.

E10 Experience speaking with and influencing individuals from internal and external organisations.

E11 Experience in partnership development and delivery.

Desirable:

F1 Competed or coached on an international level.

F2 Experience working in a university athletic environment.

Terms & Conditions.

The salary will be Grade 6, £32,332 – £36,024 per year pro rata.

This is a part-time position (17.5 hours per week) with a fixed term of May 15, 2026.
