Role Overview
This is a rewarding opportunity to join a forward-thinking mental health service dedicated to early intervention and prevention for children and young people. As an Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP), you will work directly within schools and colleges as part of the Wellbeing in Mind Team (Mental Health Support Team – MHST).
The role focuses on improving access to timely, evidence-based mental health support and helping young people build resilience and emotional wellbeing in educational settings.
About the Service
The Wellbeing in Mind Team operates across North Yorkshire and is embedded within schools and colleges. The service aligns with national priorities to expand mental health support for young people through collaboration between education and healthcare sectors.
The team’s work is structured around three core areas:
Whole-School Approach to Wellbeing
Supporting schools to develop mental health policies, deliver staff training, and promote wellbeing through initiatives such as assemblies and PHSE programmes.
Consultation & Advice for Staff
Providing guidance to teachers and school staff to strengthen their ability to support students’ mental health needs.
Direct Clinical Interventions
Delivering low-intensity psychological interventions, primarily based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to young people experiencing emotional distress.
Each of these areas forms an equal part of the role.
Key Responsibilities
As an EMHP, you will:
- Deliver evidence-based low-intensity CBT interventions to children and young people
Conduct assessments and develop appropriate care plans
Provide advice and consultation to education staff
Support schools in implementing a whole-school approach to mental health
Build strong therapeutic relationships with young people and their families
Maintain accurate clinical records and reports
Participate in safeguarding processes and risk assessments
Working Environment
You will work across multiple education settings in York, collaborating closely with:
- Teachers and school leadership teams
Mental health professionals
Families and carers
Due to the community-based nature of the role, the ability to travel independently is essential (reasonable adjustments can be considered under equality legislation).

Person Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Completion of a recognised Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) postgraduate certificate (BPS or HEE approved)
Professional registration with:
- British Psychological Society or
British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies
Essential Skills & Knowledge
- Ability to deliver low-intensity CBT interventions (LICBT)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Competence in risk assessment and safeguarding
Ability to manage workload and prioritise effectively
Understanding of how emotional difficulties affect young people
Experience
- Experience working in educational settings
Experience supporting young people with mental health challenges
Experience delivering structured psychological interventions
