About the Role
The University of Sussex is looking for a skilled Data Architect to help shape how data is managed, governed, and used across the institution.
This is not just a technical role—it’s a strategic one. You’ll be central to redefining how the University approaches data, helping move towards a more connected, insight-driven, and digitally enabled organisation. From improving decision-making to supporting innovation and AI, your work will influence how data powers every part of the University.
You’ll be part of Information Technology Services, working across departments to establish a modern, scalable data architecture that supports long-term goals under the Sussex 2035 strategy.
This role reflects wider UK priorities around digital transformation, data governance, and responsible AI

Establishing clear standards, principles, and governance frameworks
Designing approaches to data ownership, stewardship, and lifecycle management
Supporting major digital transformation and technology programmes
Improving data quality, accessibility, and consistency across systems
Enabling the responsible use of advanced analytics, automation, and AI
You’ll work closely with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, helping translate complex data concepts into practical solutions that deliver real value.
About You
You’re someone who can see the bigger picture while still understanding the technical detail. You’re comfortable leading conversations about data at both strategic and operational levels.
You should have:
- Experience as a Data Architect or in a similar senior data role
Strong understanding of enterprise data modelling and governance
Confidence working with stakeholders across large organisations
Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively
Familiarity with frameworks such as TOGAF, Archimate, or data modelling standards
Experience aligning data practices with regulatory and ethical expectations will be valuable
