The University of Sussex is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Data Architect to join its growing Digital & Data Futures programme. This is an exciting opportunity to influence how data is managed, governed, and used across a leading research university.

In this role, you will help design and deliver a modern enterprise data architecture that supports teaching, research, student experience, and institutional strategy.
About the Role
Working within Information Technology Services, you will provide strategic leadership across enterprise data architecture and governance initiatives.
You will collaborate with academic departments, professional services teams, and senior stakeholders to create scalable and sustainable data solutions that improve accessibility, quality, and consistency of institutional data.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working across complex environments and can translate technical concepts into practical business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Data Architecture
- Design and develop enterprise-wide data architecture frameworks and target data models.
Create standards, principles, and best practices for data management across the University.
Support the development of scalable, secure, and future-ready data environments.
Governance & Data Management
- Establish data governance frameworks, stewardship models, and lifecycle management processes.
Improve data quality, consistency, accessibility, and institutional reporting capabilities.
Support compliance with data governance and information management standards.
Strategic Collaboration
- Provide architectural leadership for major digital transformation projects.
Work closely with stakeholders across academic and professional service divisions.
Help shape the University’s long-term digital and data strategy.
Innovation & AI Readiness
- Contribute to the ethical and practical use of automation, analytics, and artificial intelligence.
Support initiatives that enable trusted and data-informed decision-making.
Ensure data architecture supports innovation while maintaining responsible governance.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a professional with strong experience in data architecture, enterprise information management, or related senior data leadership roles.
Essential Experience
- Proven experience designing enterprise data architectures and governance frameworks.
Strong understanding of data modelling, integration, and information lifecycle management.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience working with senior stakeholders across large or complex organisations.
Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills
Experience with recognised frameworks and methodologies would be beneficial, including:
- TOGAF
Archimate
Entity Relationship Modelling (ERM)
Decision Model and Notation (DMN)
Enterprise architecture and governance frameworks
Experience supporting cloud transformation, analytics platforms, or AI-enabled environments would also be advantageous.

Current going rate: £54,900
Eligibility will depend on salary level and Skilled Worker visa requirements.
