Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is offering an excellent opportunity for a motivated paediatric doctor to join its established undergraduate teaching programme as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Paediatrics.
This position is ideal for trainees at ST3 level and above who are passionate about medical education and would like dedicated time to build experience in teaching, mentoring, simulation, and curriculum delivery within a highly supportive academic environment.
The role is primarily education-focused, with no compulsory clinical duties, allowing the successful candidate to concentrate on delivering high-quality learning experiences to medical students from the University of Bristol and Peninsula Medical School during their Child Health placements.
Optional additional clinical shifts may be available through the Trust staff bank for candidates wishing to maintain clinical exposure.
About the Role
The Clinical Teaching Fellow will work closely with consultant educators and fellow teaching clinicians to support undergraduate paediatric education across Somerset.
Teaching responsibilities include:
- Bedside and ward-based clinical teaching
Small group tutorials and classroom sessions
Clinical skills workshops
Simulation-based learning
Student induction and assessment activities
Educational mentoring and pastoral guidance
The timetable is structured across both partner medical schools, supported by experienced educational teams and established teaching programmes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Deliver undergraduate paediatric teaching to medical students
Facilitate simulation and practical clinical skills sessions
Provide mentorship and pastoral support during student placements
Assist with student assessments, feedback, and induction programmes
Participate in educational governance, quality improvement, and audit projects
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teaching teams
Maintain safeguarding, equality, diversity, confidentiality, and governance standards

Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- MBBS or recognised equivalent medical qualification
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Essential Experience
- Minimum two years of NHS clinical experience
Previous teaching experience involving medical students, trainees, or healthcare professionals
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Experience participating in audit or clinical governance activities
Desirable Criteria
- ST4 level or above in Paediatrics
MRCPCH or equivalent postgraduate qualification
At least two years’ paediatric clinical experience
Formal teaching or medical education qualification
Experience providing pastoral or educational support
