Role Overview

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a confident and compassionate Band 6 Clinical Lead to join Rowan Ward 1, an adult acute mental health inpatient unit.

This is a senior nursing role where you will play a key part in leading clinical care, supporting staff, and ensuring safe patient journeys from admission through to discharge. You’ll be expected to make balanced clinical decisions, lead by example, and help create a ward culture built on dignity, safety, and recovery.

 Your Contribution

You will be central to maintaining high standards of care while supporting both patients and staff in a busy inpatient setting. This includes:

  • Promoting recovery-focused and person-centred care
    Leading clinical decisions during shifts
    Supporting a positive and therapeutic ward environment
    Ensuring patient safety and high-quality outcomes

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate day-to-day clinical care across the ward
    Act as Nurse in Charge, providing visible leadership during shifts
    Manage safe admissions, treatment, and discharge planning
    Deliver clinical supervision, mentorship, and appraisals to junior staff
    Support staff development and continuous learning
    Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams (MDT) including medical, psychology, occupational therapy, and social care professionals
    Maintain high standards of risk management and safeguarding
    Ensure accurate clinical documentation and contribute to audits and service improvement

 Working Pattern

  • 24-hour rota including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays
    Dedicated time for leadership, supervision, and service development activities

 Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Mental Health Nursing
    Current professional registration (e.g. NMC)

 Registration guidance

Experience

  • Experience working as a registered mental health nurse
    Evidence of ongoing professional development and post-registration training
    Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff
    Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively

(Desirable)

  • Experience with electronic patient systems (e.g. RiO)
    Involvement in audits, research, or service development
    Experience managing change in clinical environments
