Help Young People Through Mental Health Crisis Care

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and compassionate Band 6 CAMHS Crisis Clinician to join its North Yorkshire, York and Selby (NYYS) CAMHS Crisis Team.

The CAMHS Crisis Team delivers a 24/7 service across North Yorkshire, York and Selby, providing urgent assessments, safety planning, and crisis intervention support to young people under 18 and their families.

About the Role

As a CAMHS Crisis Clinician, you will play a vital role in delivering timely mental health support during periods of significant emotional distress.

You will conduct psychosocial and risk assessments, develop care and safety plans, and collaborate with young people, families, schools, and partner agencies to ensure safe and effective care.

This is a fast-paced and highly rewarding role that requires strong communication, leadership, and clinical decision-making skills.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently, coordinate shifts effectively, and travel across the locality as required.

Key Responsibilities

Crisis Assessment & Intervention

  • Conduct psychosocial assessments for children and young people experiencing mental health crises.
    Complete comprehensive risk assessments and formulate robust safety plans.
    Provide telephone triage, emotional support, and crisis management advice.
    Deliver evidence-based interventions during high-risk and emotionally challenging situations.

Clinical Leadership

  • Coordinate day-to-day clinical activity during shifts.
    Provide guidance and support to junior colleagues and multidisciplinary team members.
    Contribute to safe clinical decision-making and escalation processes.
    Promote a culture of evidence-based and person-centred practice.

Safeguarding & Risk Management

  • Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
    Ensure compliance with safeguarding procedures, clinical governance, and legal frameworks.
    Work collaboratively with external agencies to support vulnerable children and families.

Partnership & Team Working

  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, schools, social care teams, and voluntary organisations.
    Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and service development initiatives.
    Support delivery of the NHS 111 Mental Health Option 2 pathway for young people.

Working Pattern & Service Coverage

This role involves:

  • Day and night shifts on a 24/7 rota basis.
    Weekend and bank holiday working.
    Travel across North Yorkshire, York, Scarborough, and Ripon according to service demand.
    Access to pool vehicles or mileage reimbursement for work-related travel.

Applicants must have access to suitable transport for business use.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking motivated professionals who are passionate about improving mental health outcomes for children and young people.

Essential Qualifications

  • Current professional registration with an appropriate healthcare or social work regulatory body.
    Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
    Clinical supervision or mentorship qualification.
    Minimum 18 months post-qualification experience, including completion of preceptorship or competency framework.
    Strong literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.

Essential Experience

  • Experience working collaboratively with young people and families.
    Experience within multidisciplinary mental health teams.
    Experience providing clinical supervision or supporting students in practice.
    Significant experience supporting children and adolescents with mental health needs in community settings.

Essential Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Children’s legislation.
    Strong safeguarding knowledge and application in practice.
    Clinical risk assessment and crisis management skills.
    Understanding of psychological and therapeutic models of care.
    Ability to communicate effectively in emotionally sensitive situations.
    Strong leadership and team coordination abilities.

Desirable Qualifications

  • CBT, Family Therapy, or other therapeutic training.
    Leadership or management qualification.
    Training in parenting group facilitation.
