About the Role

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated doctor at ST3–ST5 level to combine clinical practice with a strong focus on medical education. The role is evenly split between clinical duties and teaching, allowing you to continue developing as a senior clinician while building formal expertise in undergraduate education.

The post is ideal for those considering a future career in academic medicine, clinical education, or leadership within training programmes. Funding support is available for a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Medical Education.

Role Structure

  • 50% Clinical Work (Acute Medicine)
    50% Teaching & Education (Undergraduate Medical Students)
    Two posts available (shared at a 50:50 basis)

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Work as a middle-grade (Tier 2) doctor within Acute Medicine
    Contribute to both emergency and elective patient care
    Participate in the general medical on-call rota
    Support patient management, documentation, and clinical decision-making
    Engage in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities
    Work collaboratively with consultants and multidisciplinary teams

Clinical duties will be tailored to ensure a balance with teaching commitments.

Teaching & Education Responsibilities

  • Deliver teaching to undergraduate medical students (Years 3–5)
    Facilitate bedside teaching, small group sessions, and ward-based learning
    Contribute to simulation training, clinical skills teaching, and assessments
    Support student projects, including Student Selected Components (SSCs)
    Collaborate with fellow educators across the clinical academy network
    Contribute to curriculum development and provide feedback to improve programmes

Training & Development Opportunities

  • Funding towards a PGCert in Medical Education
    Access to simulation training courses (e.g., Train the Trainers)
    Opportunities for educational research, presentations, and publications
    Participation in teaching programmes and CPD events
    Full clinical supervision, appraisal, and mentoring support
    Administrative and academic support from a dedicated education team

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Full registration with a licence to practise from the General Medical Council
    MRCP Part 1 qualification
    Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
    Minimum 4 years of NHS experience
    Completion of Core/Internal Medicine Training (or equivalent)
    Strong interest and experience in teaching medical students
    Good communication, teamwork, and organisational skills

Desirable:

  • MRCP Part 2 and PACES
    Postgraduate qualification in education
    Understanding of medical education theory and curriculum design
    Experience working at ST3 level or above
