The University of Reading is seeking an exceptional leader to become the inaugural Agrifood Futures Director, a high-impact strategic role driving one of the University’s most ambitious research and innovation programmes.

The Opportunity
The Agrifood Futures Director will provide strategic leadership across the programme’s research, innovation, infrastructure, and external engagement activities.
This senior appointment offers the chance to shape a globally influential initiative by working across academia, government, industry, and international partnerships.
The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams, oversee large-scale investments, and drive collaboration across the University’s Priority Research Areas and Systems & Futures Hub.
The role also involves acting as a visible external ambassador for the initiative while helping secure significant investment and research partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
The Director will:
- Lead the strategic delivery of the Agrifood Futures programme
Build and strengthen partnerships across academia, government, and industry
Oversee major research infrastructure and innovation investments
Support the development of collaborative and interdisciplinary research programmes
Drive research excellence, public impact, and external funding opportunities
Represent the University nationally and internationally within the agrifood sector
Candidate Profile
The University is seeking an internationally respected leader with:
- Significant experience in agrifood research, policy, innovation, or industry leadership
A strong understanding of global food systems and sustainability challenges
Proven success leading complex, large-scale collaborative programmes
The ability to influence senior stakeholders across sectors and governments
Experience securing strategic partnerships, investment, or research funding
Outstanding leadership, communication, and organisational capabilities
