Join a Leading Infection & Microbiology Service in Somerset

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant Microbiologist / Infection Specialist to join its established Infection Team.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a highly collaborative and forward-thinking microbiology and infection service supporting both acute and community healthcare settings across Somerset.

The successful candidate will join a specialist team consisting of infection consultants, microbiology trainees, laboratory professionals, antimicrobial stewardship practitioners, and infection prevention colleagues.

About the Role

Based primarily at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, this role also includes providing clinical microbiology support to Yeovil District Hospital, community hospitals, general practitioners, and independent healthcare providers within the region.

You will contribute to a comprehensive clinical microbiology service delivering:

  • Bacteriology investigations
    Mycology services
    Parasitology testing
    Serological diagnostics
    Viral detection services

The department works closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Public Health Laboratory in Bristol for specialist molecular testing and virology advice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Service Delivery

  • Provide high-quality clinical microbiology and infection consultation services.
    Support antimicrobial stewardship initiatives and infection prevention strategies.
    Offer specialist advice to hospital clinicians, community healthcare teams, and GPs.
    Participate in ward-based clinical liaison and multidisciplinary discussions.

Laboratory & Diagnostic Support

  • Contribute to interpretation of microbiological investigations and diagnostic reporting.
    Support effective use of laboratory information systems including WinPath Enterprise and Clinisys ICE.
    Work collaboratively with pathology and laboratory teams to ensure high-quality diagnostic services.

Teaching & Professional Development

  • Deliver teaching and training to medical, nursing, and allied healthcare staff.
    Support postgraduate and multidisciplinary education activities.
    Participate in continuous professional development and clinical learning.

Governance & Quality Improvement

  • Participate in audit, service evaluation, and quality improvement projects.
    Support clinical governance, patient safety, and infection control standards.
    Contribute to development and implementation of antimicrobial guidelines.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a motivated clinician with strong clinical microbiology expertise and excellent communication skills.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise (or eligibility within six months of interview).
    Evidence of equivalent qualification to FRCPath.
    Evidence of continuing medical education and professional development.

Desirable Qualifications

FRCPath qualification.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Extensive ward-based clinical liaison experience.
    Strong analytical and scientific problem-solving abilities.
    Ability to mentor and support medical and nursing colleagues.
    Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
    Excellent communication, organisational, and prioritisation skills.
    Ability to adapt and work effectively within evolving healthcare environments.

Desirable Experience

  • Development and implementation of antimicrobial guidelines.
    Experience in infection control leadership.
    Postgraduate teaching and multidisciplinary training experience.
    Understanding of NHS operational and governance structures.
