Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting Band 5–6 Development Opportunity within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Crisis Team.
This role is ideal for motivated and compassionate NMC-registered nurses who are passionate about supporting children and young people experiencing mental health crises.
The successful candidate will initially join as a Band 5 clinician and receive structured support, supervision, and competency-based development to progress into a permanent Band 6 CAMHS Crisis Clinician role.
This is an excellent opportunity to build specialist skills in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and therapeutic support within a highly supportive multidisciplinary team.
About the Role
As part of the CAMHS Crisis Service, you will provide rapid assessment, intervention, and emotional support to children and young people experiencing acute mental health difficulties.
You will work closely with families, carers, schools, and healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and person-centred care.
The role is varied, fast-paced, and rewarding, offering continuous opportunities to expand your clinical expertise and develop professionally.
Key Responsibilities
Crisis Assessment & Intervention
- Conduct mental health and psychosocial assessments for children and young people.
Support development of risk management and safety planning strategies.
Deliver evidence-based interventions and therapeutic support.
Assist young people and families during periods of emotional distress and crisis.
Multidisciplinary Team Working
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary CAMHS team.
Liaise with external agencies including schools, social care, and emergency services.
Contribute to coordinated care planning and clinical reviews.
Support positive outcomes through partnership-based working.
Professional Development
- Participate in structured Band 5 to Band 6 competency development.
Engage in regular supervision, appraisal, and continuing professional development.
Contribute to service improvement initiatives and reflective practice.
Develop leadership and clinical decision-making skills.
Service Delivery
- Support delivery of a 24/7 crisis service including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Work across locality bases in York, Scarborough, and Ripon as required.
Maintain high standards of safeguarding, clinical governance, and safe practice.

Essential Qualifications
Current NMC registration:
- RNMH or
RNLD or
RNSC (CAMHS only)
Successful completion of preceptorship programme.
Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
Willingness to work towards Practice Assessor/Mentor qualification.
Clinical Supervisor training within probationary period.
Essential Experience
- Experience supporting individuals with mental ill health or learning disabilities.
Experience working in multidisciplinary healthcare environments.
Experience working collaboratively with families, carers, and partner agencies.
Understanding of person-centred therapeutic approaches.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of evidence-based mental health care practices.
Understanding of:
- Mental Health Act (MHA)
Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
Safeguarding legislation and procedures
Clinical risk assessment and management skills.
Understanding of clinical governance and medicines management.
Strong communication, teamwork, and emotional resilience.
About the CAMHS Crisis Team
The North Yorkshire, York and Selby CAMHS Crisis Team operates as a locality-wide service supporting children and young people across the region.
The service delivers urgent mental health assessment, crisis intervention, and short-term support for young people experiencing acute emotional or psychological distress.
Team members work across multiple locations including:
- Foss Park Hospital – York
Cross Lane Hospital – Scarborough
The Orchards – Ripon
The team promotes innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement while maintaining a strong focus on compassionate care.
