Make a Difference in Specialist Forensic Mental Health Care

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist in Forensic Psychiatry to join its Secure Inpatient Services Directorate at Roseberry Park Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a highly specialised low secure learning disability service supporting female patients with complex mental health and forensic care needs.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership on Ivy, Clover, and Kestrel wards while contributing to multidisciplinary care planning, service development, and long-term recovery pathways.

About the Role

This consultant position is based within a secure inpatient setting where clinical, operational, and leadership teams are fully integrated on-site.

You will work closely with an experienced multidisciplinary team including:

  • Ward managers
    Clinical leads
    Psychologists
    Occupational therapists
    Social workers
    Pharmacists
    SAS and junior doctors

The service focuses on delivering person-centred, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care to patients detained under the Mental Health Act.

As Responsible Clinician, you will oversee complex forensic cases and contribute to high-quality therapeutic and risk management interventions.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide consultant-level psychiatric care within a low secure forensic learning disability service.
    Lead multidisciplinary treatment planning and clinical decision-making.
    Support comprehensive risk assessment and formulation processes.
    Deliver evidence-based psychiatric interventions within secure inpatient services.

Responsible Clinician Duties

  • Fulfil duties under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA).
    Prepare statutory reports and attend Mental Health Tribunals and Hospital Managers’ Hearings.
    Participate in CPA reviews, MAPPA meetings, and Section 117 aftercare planning.
    Ensure safe, ethical, and legally compliant clinical practice.

Team & Service Development

  • Provide supervision and support to junior medical staff.
    Contribute to education, teaching, audit, and service improvement activities.
    Collaborate with consultants and multidisciplinary colleagues across secure services.
    Support innovation and quality improvement within forensic mental health care.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a motivated psychiatrist with excellent clinical expertise, strong leadership capability, and a commitment to collaborative care.

Essential Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
    Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
    MRCPsych qualification.
    Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in the relevant specialty, or within six months of achieving CCT.
    Approved Clinician status.
    Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act.
    Strong understanding of forensic psychiatry and learning disability services.
    Excellent communication and multidisciplinary working skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within NHS forensic or secure inpatient services.
    Involvement in research, teaching, clinical audit, or service evaluation.
    Leadership experience within mental health or secure services.
    Qualification in medical education, management, or clinical research.
    Experience driving quality improvement initiatives.
