Role Overview
This Clinical Assistant Professorship sits within a NIHR-supported academic pathway focused on the intersection of endocrinology, diabetes, ageing, and dementia research.
The post is jointly delivered by BSMS and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, combining clinical practice with high-level academic research.
You will contribute to a multidisciplinary programme exploring how metabolic health influences cognitive decline, with a strong focus on translational research within the dementia theme.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide specialist clinical input in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus
Work at Royal Sussex County Hospital under honorary NHS contract
Contribute to outpatient and inpatient care aligned with specialty training requirements
Engage in clinical decision-making within endocrinology services
Academic & Research Work
- Conduct research within the NIHR Dementia-focused programme
Develop an independent clinical academic portfolio
Collaborate with the Centre for Dementia Studies and neuroscience teams
Produce high-quality peer-reviewed publications and grant applications
Teaching & Supervision
- Contribute to medical student and postgraduate teaching
Support clinical training within endocrinology and dementia-related learning
Mentor junior researchers and trainees in academic medicine
Collaboration & Integration
- Work across BSMS departments including clinical neuroscience and dementia research groups
Liaise with NHS clinicians, academic supervisors, and research partners
Support integration of clinical data into research outputs
Candidate Profile
Essential Requirements
- Specialty trainee in Endocrinology & Diabetes (ST5/ST6 level)
Completion of a PhD or MD in a relevant clinical or scientific field
Demonstrated interest in academic medicine and dementia research
Strong clinical competence in endocrinology practice
Evidence of research activity (publications, presentations, or grants)
Skills & Attributes
- Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with research commitments
Strong analytical and scientific thinking
Excellent communication skills across clinical and academic environments
Independent working with collaborative mindset
Desirable Experience
- Previous exposure to dementia, ageing, or neuro-metabolic research
Experience in clinical trials or translational research
