Role Overview

An exciting opportunity is available for an NIHR-funded Clinical Lecturer in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus, with a specialist focus on dementia and ageing research.

This post is jointly hosted by the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, offering a unique platform to develop a high-impact academic career at the intersection of metabolic health, ageing, and neurodegenerative disease.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic multidisciplinary research environment within the Department of Clinical Neuroscience and the Centre for Dementia Studies.

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will:

Undertake outpatient and clinical sessions in Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Royal Sussex County Hospital
Work under an honorary NHS clinical contract
Participate in supervised specialist training aligned with endocrinology and diabetes progression
Contribute to patient care within multidisciplinary clinical teams

On-call duties are not mandatory but may be included if mutually agreed for training purposes.

Academic Responsibilities

Academically, the role will involve:

  • Conducting research within dementia, ageing, and metabolic disease pathways
    Collaborating with the Centre for Dementia Studies and CEDAR Lab
    Developing independent research outputs leading to publications and grant applications
    Contributing to teaching and postgraduate medical education
    Supporting innovation in translational clinical research

Candidate Profile

This post is designed for specialty trainees in:

Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus (ST5/ST6 level)

Essential Requirements:

  • Completion of a PhD or MD
    Strong academic research background
    Evidence of clinical competence in endocrinology
    Commitment to academic medicine and research leadership
    Ability to balance clinical training and research responsibilities

Desirable Attributes:

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
    Experience in dementia or ageing-related research
    Teaching or supervision experience
    Familiarity with NHS clinical governance systems

Contract Details

  • Fixed-term: 2 years or until completion of CCT
    Flexible academic-clinical balance
    Based at Brighton campus and Royal Sussex County Hospital
    Start date: October 2026 (earliest)

    May also qualify for Global Talent visa route
    DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance required due to work with vulnerable adults
