Join a Progressive Community Mental Health Service in North Yorkshire
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Ripon Integrated Community Team (RICT) within the Harrogate locality.
Based in the historic cathedral city of Ripon, this position offers the opportunity to work within a modern community mental health service focused on collaborative care, clinical leadership, and innovative service delivery.
This vacancy has arisen following the relocation of the previous substantive consultant and offers a well-supported environment with flexible working opportunities and strong multidisciplinary collaboration.
About the Service
The Harrogate locality is served by two integrated community mental health teams:
Harrogate Integrated Community Team (HICT)
Ripon Integrated Community Team (RICT)
These services include:
- Community mental health care
Assertive outreach functions
Primary care mental health support
Crisis resolution and home treatment services
Hospital liaison psychiatry
The successful consultant will primarily support the Ripon Integrated Community Team, covering the areas of Ripon, Knaresborough, and Boroughbridge.
Inpatient mental health services are delivered through Foss Park Hospital, supported by local crisis and home treatment teams.
Key Responsibilities
The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide clinical leadership in line with modern community psychiatry and the NHS “New Ways of Working” model.
Core duties include:
- Conducting outpatient psychiatric assessments and reviews
Leading multidisciplinary formulation and care planning meetings
Managing Mental Health Act-related responsibilities
Supporting service development and quality improvement initiatives
Supervising and collaborating with junior medical staff
Providing consultant input for complex community mental health cases
Participating in clinical governance, appraisal, and continuing professional development
The post holder will:
- Conduct up to 2 new assessments weekly following initial triage by care coordinators
Provide approximately 10 follow-up reviews per week
Act as lead professional for patients not subject to CPA arrangements
Share medical cover arrangements with another consultant working within the team
The role does not involve acting as a care coordinator.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for an experienced psychiatrist who demonstrates:
- Strong leadership and clinical decision-making skills
Excellent communication and multidisciplinary teamwork abilities
Commitment to evidence-based psychiatric care
Interest in service transformation and quality improvement
Ability to manage complex clinical presentations confidently
Essential Qualifications & Registration
Applicants must have:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or expected within six months of CCT
Approved Clinician status or ability to achieve within three months
Section 12 approval or ability to obtain within three months
Desirable Qualifications
- MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Higher degree in medical education, research, or management
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
Skills & Professional Experience
Successful applicants should demonstrate:
- Excellent knowledge within psychiatry and community mental health
Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
Strong understanding of Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA) responsibilities
Experience contributing to teaching, audit, research, or service evaluation
Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD)
Desirable Experience
- Specialist or sub-specialist NHS psychiatry experience
Leadership in quality improvement projects
Research publications or educational achievements
