About the Opportunity

The Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Sussex is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Sociology on a one-year fixed-term basis. This role is designed to provide teaching and administrative cover during a colleague’s research leave.

You’ll play a central role in delivering high-quality teaching and supporting students through their academic journey. The position is particularly suited to someone with an interest or expertise in migration studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver teaching for two undergraduate modules:
    Migration and Integration (Year 2)
    Migration, Identity and Home (Year 3)
    Contribute to broader Sociology teaching across the department
    Supervise undergraduate dissertations
    Provide academic support and guidance to students
    Undertake marking, assessment, and feedback duties
    Participate in departmental administration and academic teamwork

About You

You should bring both subject expertise and a genuine commitment to student learning. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline
    Experience teaching in higher education
    Knowledge or research interest in migration, identity, or related areas
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    The ability to work collaboratively within an academic team

The Department of Sociology and Criminology is a well-established, research-driven academic community with around 35 faculty members and approximately 450 students. It offers successful postgraduate programmes in Gender Studies and Criminology.
