Role Summary
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, combined with an Honorary Consultant Physician role in partnership with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
This is a unique opportunity for a medically qualified academic who is passionate about teaching, research, and clinical practice. You will contribute to shaping future doctors while maintaining an active clinical role within NHS services, primarily across sites in Brighton and Haywards Heath.
What the Role Involves
This position blends academic leadership, clinical expertise, and educational innovation. Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering high-quality teaching in clinical pharmacology across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
Contributing to curriculum development, including modern teaching approaches such as simulation and digital learning
Supporting assessment design and evaluation processes
Engaging in research activity within clinical pharmacology or related fields
Providing clinical care as an Honorary Consultant within NHS services
Supporting training and development of junior doctors and specialist trainees
Collaborating across academic, clinical, and multidisciplinary teams
About You
You will be a motivated and forward-thinking clinician with a strong academic background.
Essential profile:
- Dual accreditation in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and General Internal Medicine
Experience in medical education across different training levels
Evidence of involvement in research and academic scholarship
Strong communication and leadership skills
Ability to work across both academic and clinical environments
Desirable experience:
- Curriculum design and programme development
Use of innovative teaching methods (e.g. simulation, digital platforms)
Inter-professional education and collaboration

Clinical Partnership
The role includes an honorary consultant position with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Clinical duties will primarily take place at:
- Royal Sussex County Hospital (Brighton)
Princess Royal Hospital (Haywards Heath)
There may also be opportunities for cross-site working depending on service needs.
