Role Overview
The University of Sussex is recruiting a part-time Assistant Professor in Criminology within the Department of Sociology and Criminology. This role is focused on teaching, assessment, and student support, contributing to the delivery of high-quality criminology education.
You will be responsible for delivering engaging lectures and seminars, supervising dissertations, and supporting students throughout their academic journey. The role also includes marking, assessment design, and participation in departmental academic activities.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver lectures and seminars in criminology modules
Supervise undergraduate dissertation students
Design, mark, and assess student coursework
Provide academic guidance and pastoral support
Contribute to departmental teaching and administrative activities
Work collaboratively within a supportive academic team
About You
You will be a committed educator with a strong academic background in criminology or a related field.
Essential requirements:
- PhD in Criminology or a closely related discipline
Experience teaching in higher education
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to support diverse student groups effectively
Commitment to high-quality teaching and learning
You should also be comfortable working as part of a collegial, team-oriented department.
About the Department
The Department of Sociology and Criminology is a well-established, research-active academic unit with strengths in:
- Criminology and criminal justice
Sociology of inequality and social structures
Gender studies and social theory
The department is home to around 30 academic staff and approximately 450 students. It is recognised for its strong teaching performance and internationally rated research output.
It also offers successful postgraduate programmes in Criminology and Gender Studies and maintains a strong focus on research-led teaching.
