About the Institution

Founded in 1915, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) is one of the UK’s leading centres for research and teaching on Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, the Baltic region, and Russia.

The School promotes interdisciplinary and comparative approaches across areas such as economics, politics, sociology, history, and cultural studies. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, contributing significantly to global understanding of the region.

Role Overview

The Alexander Nash Fellow will be appointed for a two-year period (1 September 2026 – 31 August 2028) to carry out an independent research programme in Albanian Studies.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct high-quality, original research leading to peer-reviewed publications.
Present and disseminate research findings to academic and broader audiences.
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities.
Provide dissertation supervision for students specialising in Albanian Studies.

Person Specification

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A completed PhD (or equivalent doctorate) in a relevant discipline such as Anthropology, History, Politics, Sociology, Economics, or related fields.
    A strong research proposal (2-year project) focused on Albanian culture, society, politics, or history.
    Preference will be given to candidates specialising in contemporary topics.
    Fluency or strong proficiency in the Albanian language.
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Previous teaching experience.
    Ability to work collaboratively within an academic team.

    Statement on contribution to Albanian Studies at SSEES (1–2 pages)
