This is a valuable opportunity for aspiring psychologists to gain hands-on clinical experience within a supportive community mental health setting. Three Assistant Psychologist positions are available within South Durham’s Adult Community Planned Care service.
Working under the supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist, you will play an active role in delivering compassionate, evidence-based psychological support to individuals living in the community.
About the Role
In this position, you will contribute to both direct and indirect psychological care. Your work will focus on supporting individuals experiencing mental health difficulties while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in psychological assessments and contributing to case formulations
Supporting the development of behaviour support plans
Delivering low-intensity and non-pharmacological interventions
Participating in group-based therapeutic activities
Attending team meetings and contributing to care discussions
Monitoring and evaluating intervention outcomes

Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- A degree in Psychology
Eligibility for Graduate Membership with the British Psychological Society
Knowledge & Understanding
- Awareness of how psychological theory is applied in healthcare
Understanding of mental health conditions and patient needs
Knowledge of confidentiality and ethical practice in clinical settings
Experience
- Some exposure to mental health, psychological, or social care environments
(this may include voluntary work, lived experience, or supporting others)
Ability to engage with diverse populations, including individuals from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds
Confidence in communicating sensitively with vulnerable individuals
Desirable
- Postgraduate study in psychology or related fields
Experience in research methods or data analysis
