About the Service

The Tees-wide Liaison Psychiatry Service operates across multiple hospital sites in Teesside. It works in partnership with acute hospital teams to deliver mental health assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and care planning for adults aged 18 and over who present with complex mental health needs.

The service runs continuously (24/7), so flexibility is essential, including evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities

As a Liaison Nurse, you will:

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and senior nurses
    Provide mental health assessments and contribute to care planning for patients in acute hospital settings
    Deliver person-centred care that respects the needs and preferences of patients and their families
    Support patients across a wide range of mental health conditions
    Maintain high standards of communication, even in fast-paced or high-pressure situations
    Apply clinical judgement to assess and manage risk effectively

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with a valid UK Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) registration
    Willingness to become a Practice Assessor/Mentor within an agreed timeframe
    Clinical supervision training (to be completed within the probation period)
    Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience

  • Experience supporting individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities
    Working within multidisciplinary teams
    Engaging with patients, families, and carers
    Collaborating with external agencies

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of mental health legislation, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
    Knowledge of safeguarding principles
    Experience in clinical risk assessment and management
    Familiarity with medicines management and safe administration
    Ability to stay calm, communicate clearly, and solve problems under pressure
