Overview
This is a rewarding opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to contribute to a developing rehabilitation service within Somerset. The role is split across an inpatient setting (Willow Ward) and a newly established Open Mental Health Rehabilitation Team, designed to strengthen community-based care.
The post is full-time (10 Programmed Activities per week), with flexibility in how those hours are arranged, including the possibility of a compressed four-day working week and some remote working. The Trust is actively promoting work-life balance and clinician wellbeing.
Role Purpose
You will take a leading clinical role in shaping and delivering rehabilitation services for individuals with complex and enduring mental health conditions. Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will provide both direct patient care and strategic leadership as the service evolves.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
- Lead clinical care across Willow Ward and the community rehabilitation team
Manage a caseload of patients in both inpatient and community settings
Maintain Responsible Clinician (RC) duties under the Mental Health Act
Provide expert consultation to partner organisations and services
Service Development
- Contribute to the expansion and improvement of rehabilitation pathways
Support the implementation of community-focused mental health strategies
Participate in service planning and quality improvement initiatives
Team Collaboration
- Work alongside multidisciplinary professionals to coordinate care
Promote effective communication and shared decision-making within teams
Support colleagues in maintaining high standards of patient safety and care
Governance & Professional Duties
- Ensure accurate clinical documentation and reporting
Participate in audits, appraisals, and continuing professional development (CPD)
Uphold professional standards as outlined by regulatory bodies
Contribute to risk management and service evaluation processes
About the Service
Willow Ward is an 11-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit supporting adults with complex mental health needs. Patients may present with:
- Severe and enduring mental illness
Co-existing conditions such as substance misuse
Neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism, ADHD)
Physical health conditions impacting daily functioning
The ward accepts both detained and voluntary patients and works closely with community services to support recovery and transition.
On-Call Commitment
- 1 in 11 rota (non-mandatory participation)
Weekdays: 5pm – 9am
Weekends: Saturday 9am – Monday 9am
Includes senior medical cover and Mental Health Act responsibilities
Person Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Medical degree with Royal College membership (or equivalent)
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (via CCT or equivalent)
