Role Overview
This is a senior clinical opportunity to play a key role in shaping stroke services across Somerset. The Trust is undergoing a major transformation, including the launch of a new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU), offering you the chance to influence how stroke care is delivered at a system-wide level.
You will join a well-established and collaborative team of consultants and specialist doctors, working together to provide high-quality care across hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation pathways.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
- Lead ward rounds within the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
Deliver acute stroke care, including thrombolysis services
Manage patients across inpatient stroke units and rehabilitation pathways
Run rapid access TIA clinics (7-day service)
Support early discharge and community rehabilitation services
Service Development & Innovation
- Contribute to the design and expansion of stroke services across Somerset
Support implementation of the new HASU model
Participate in quality improvement and clinical governance initiatives
Work within national clinical frameworks and standards
Multidisciplinary & Network Working
- Collaborate with stroke physicians, specialist nurses, therapists, and wider MDT
Work with telemedicine networks to deliver timely stroke interventions
Provide cross-site support between Musgrove Park and Yeovil hospitals
Teaching, Supervision & Research
- Supervise junior doctors and support medical education
Participate in teaching and training programmes
Engage in research activity and contribute to ongoing stroke trials
On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in the 1 in 8 weekend on-call rota for HASU services
Support emergency stroke care provision as part of the consultant team

What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council and licence to practise
MRCP (or equivalent qualification)
Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
Experience & Skills
- Strong experience in acute stroke care, thrombolysis, and TIA management
Knowledge of stroke rehabilitation pathways
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
Desirable
- Higher research qualification
Experience in leadership, teaching, and audit
Involvement in stroke research or quality improvement initiatives
Additional Requirements
- This role requires a DBS check
Overseas applicants must provide a criminal record certificate
Applicants must hold valid UK professional registration
